Overgate has announced it is supporting Green Health Week in association with the Dundee Green Health Partnership.

The aim of Green Health Week is to inform and support shoppers on the benefits of getting outside and visiting green spaces to help improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Enjoying the outdoors and being active is recognised as helping to increase energy levels, improve mood, ease stress and tension, help tackle poor sleep and improve people’s ability to deal with life’s problems.

As part of the initiative, Overgate will be hosting a fantastic range of green-themed activities and information points inside and outside of the centre between the 22nd and 28th of April.

Starting on Monday the 22nd, Dundee Therapy Garden, SAMH, Rediscover Dundee, Broughty Ferry in Bloom, Dundee United Community Trust and Volunteer Dundee will be inside the centre ready to inspire customers. Friends of Miley will visit on Tuesday the 23rd while EBS Cycle Centre, Wellbeing Works, Friends of The Botanics, Friends of Tayside, Carers Centre and Recycling education will all be visiting between Wednesday the 24th and Sunday the 28th of April.

There will be an opportunity to watch talented young artists from across the city at work between 10am until 12 noon on Monday the 22nd, Wednesday the 24th and Thursday the 25th of April as Overgate welcomes local nurseries and schools to decorate the centre’s glass wall. They include children from Roseangle Nursery, St Mary`s Primary, Craigowl Primary, Rosebank Primary, St Peter and Pauls Primary, Ark Nursery, Forthill Primary, Butterflies Nursery, St Andrews R.C. Primary, and Ardler Primary.

Overgate’s popular outdoor children’s playpark in William Gardiner Square will see Bonnie Dundee planting up the gardens for the new season on Monday the 22nd of April. Children are invited to come along and make up their own pot with sunflower seeds to then grow at home.

The outdoor horticultural theme continues on Saturday the 27th of April at Overgate’s herb garden next to the playpark as Bonnie Dundee will be on hand with information and support on how to grow your own herbs, as well the opportunity to pick up a free herb plant to take home.

For details of all the Green Health Week activities, the public can visit the Overgate Customer Service Desk from Monday the 8th of April. Embracing the green theme, the desk will be decorated with planting and Overgate staff will be dressed for the great outdoors!

The wonderful outdoor-themed bunting created by local schools and nurseries will be displayed around the centre too for further inspiration.

Speaking ahead of the events, Morag Dennis, Operations Manager, Overgate said,

Overgate is delighted to be supporting Green Health Week with our friends at the Dundee Green Health Partnership. There are countless benefits of getting outside and visiting green spaces to help improve people’s physical and mental wellbeing and this fantastic campaign will highlight many of the ways to help people get started. We are excited to be hosting so many activities inside and outside of the centre between the 22nd and 28th of April and would encourage everyone to join us and meet as many of our green-themed partners too who will be sharing lots of useful information.”

Neighbourhood Services Convener Councillor Kevin Cordell added, “It’s great to see Overgate supporting the Green Health Partnership. Over the course of Green Health Week we will be promoting green initiatives and continuing to raise awareness about the health benefits between green space and a better mental and physical health. In Dundee, we are leading the way when it comes to green health by creating new ways to encourage people to get outdoors and make active travel choices.”
