OVERGATE, DUNDEE HAILS THE SUCCESS OF ITS INAUGURAL HOPE CHALLENGE

ST JOHN’S HIGH SCHOOL NAMED THE 2021 WINNER OF THE INITIATIVE WHICH AIMS TO NURTURE DUNDEE’S BUSINESS STARS OF THE FUTURE

Overgate in Dundee has hailed the success of an inaugural initiative it has created that aims to nurture future generations of the city’s young entrepreneurs and business leaders.

The Overgate HOPE Challenge tasked pupils from local secondary schools to work in teams to develop a campaign focussed on one of Overgate’s HOPE pillars; Health, Opportunities, Partnerships or Education.

The project, which took place in the centre, saw pupils from Braeview Academy, Craigie High School, Morgan Academy and St John’s High School take part in a full day workshop before presenting their campaign idea to judges Alison Henderson, CEO of Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce and Barrie Moran, Founder of Purple Imp marketing agency.

Each competing school was guided by a business mentor with pupils creating a marketing and financial strategy for their idea. The four ideas presented to the judging panel were:

A project to support single parent families in Dundee.

A project to help young people in Dundee secure jobs and strengthen their employability skills.

A project to use a vacant retail space to create a place for everyone in the community to gather.

A project to use a vacant retail space to improve the mental health of young people.

After much deliberation, St John’s High School was named the winner for 2021 with its campaign focussed on improving the mental health of young people.

In recognition of their hard work, every pupil in attendance from each participating school received an award trophy, an Overgate gift card, a goody bag and lunch from Frankie & Benny’s or Five Guys.

Commenting, Malcolm Angus, Centre Manager of Overgate said;

The inaugural Overgate HOPE Challenge was a resounding success with every pupil demonstrating remarkable entrepreneurial thinking and good numeracy and literacy skills.

“Overgate is committed to inspiring the next generation of young people in Dundee and helping to equip them with the skills required for the modern workplace, something our annual HOPE Challenge will positively contribute to.

“It was a tough call for the judges but we extend our congratulations to St John’s whose campaign, focussed on improving the mental health of young people, edged it as the overall winner for 2021.”
