A touch of the Scandinavian is coming to Overgate shopping centre! Crafted Pine Co are confirmed as the inaugural winner of Legal & General’s ‘Grow at Overgate’ initiative.

The locally run family business, which creates eco-friendly and fun home accessories from high-quality and sustainable pine, is expanding and has signed an initial 12-month lease at the mall and its new workshop will be up and running in time for spring. The fit-out of its first-floor unit will begin in the coming months.

Crafted Pine Co will also be joined by two runners-up after Olly Bobbins, a family-run florist and gift concept, and Sweet Bakes Patisserie, a handcrafted chocolate and patisserie idea, also impressed the judging panel. They have been offered free kiosk space to trade from for the next 12 months.

From 16 applicants, Crafted Pine Co made a final shortlist of five and was invited to deliver a presentation about its business concept last month to Tom Williams, fund manager at Legal & General – owner of Overgate – as well as Malcolm Angus, centre manager at the shopping centre.

Don Tait, owner of Crafted Pine Co, scored highly across the board for his business’ social values, the quality of the product and future vision – and as a result, have been crowned as the inaugural winner of ‘Grow at Overgate’.

The initiative launched back in September, providing small business owners and local entrepreneurs the opportunity to secure retail space at Overgate, completely free for a year.

Malcolm Angus says he is delighted to be welcoming Crafted Pine Co to Overgate next year: “We had a lot of excellent and high-quality submissions for ‘Overgate’ during the application process. We were overwhelmed with the quality of the response.

“The outstanding quality of Crafted Pine Co’s application, though, really caught our attention immediately. The team here at Overgate and Legal & General have a shared passion for social and environment values and Crafted Pine Co ticked all the boxes.

“We’re also committed to supporting our community and to have the opportunity to work with a popular local business like this is brilliant news. We’re also pleased to be working with Olly Bobbins and Sweet Bakes Patisserie.

“There’s no question that all three businesses will bring something completely different to the shopping centre and I think our local shoppers are going to love them just as much as we do. We cannot wait to welcome them to Overgate next year.”

Don Tait, managing director of Crafted Pine Co, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won the Overgate’s Grow initiative competition. As a small, family-run business from Dundee, this is a huge opportunity for us to bring our handmade, Scandi-inspired homewares to a new audience. The whole Crafted Pine Co team are now busy making plans for our unit to open early 2020. We can’t thank the team at the Overgate enough for this life-changing opportunity. It really is a dream come true for our family.

Paul McFawns and Joe Rodger, co-founders of Olly Bobbins, said: “We can’t believe that we will be opening our own shop in the Overgate. We can’t wait to get stuck in in the New Year and already have lots of ideas buzzing around our heads. It is going to be an amazing year for Olly Bobbins.

The ‘Grow’ initiative is such a fantastic idea to help support local businesses like ours. We are seeing more and more shops close their doors in recent years and programmes like this are integral to helping bring back life to our high streets. This opportunity will allow us to grow in ways we wouldn’t have dreamed of over the next year, and we’d encourage any other budding businesses to jump at chances like these when they come up.”

Michelle Norval-Smith, owner of Sweet Bakes Patisserie, added: “I think I am still shocked to receive runner up in this competition, I never thought I would get so far when I entered. It’s an amazing opportunity for small local business to showcase their products and grow their business within the Overgate. I am so proud at how far Sweet Bakes Patisserie has grown and look forward to what this year will bring.”
