WORLD DIABETES DAY 2016

On Monday 14th November, Overgate will join millions of people around the world to come together and raise awareness of diabetes. Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), this is a global campaign which will see activity take place around the world.

For those of you who are unsure about the facts around diabetes we have highlighted points in this article to help you out.

Firstly, if you are unsure what diabetes is, it is a condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. This is because the pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin, or not enough to help the glucose enter the body’s cells – or the insulin that is produced does not work properly.

Common symptoms of diabetes include:

·       Going to the toilet a lot, especially at night.

·       Being really thirsty.

·       Feeling more tired than usual.

·       Losing weight without trying to.

·       Genital itching or thrush.

·       Cuts and wounds take longer to heal.

·       Blurred vision.

If you have any symptoms of diabetes, you should contact your GP. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have diabetes, but it’s worth checking – early diagnosis, treatment and good control are vital for good health and reduce the chances of developing serious complications.

It is estimated that globally as many as 193 million people are currently living with diabetes and are unaware of their disease. Most of these cases are type 2 diabetes.

If you're diagnosed with diabetes, you'll need to eat healthily, takeregular exercise and carry out regular blood tests to ensure your blood glucose levels stay balanced.
