Dental and oral health experts in Dundee are taking to the streets during Mouth Cancer Awareness Month in a bid to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

The team will be in Dundee City Centre from Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th November in both the Steeple Church and Overgate Shopping Centre.

This devastating disease is more common than cervical cancer in women and testicular cancer in men put together. It now accounts for more deaths than road traffic accidents and has increased by 50% across the UK in the last decade.

Now, as part of a special “Let’s Talk About Mouth Cancer” campaign week a pop-up shop is being set up in Dundee’s Steeple Centre. The public will be empowered with the skills to check their own mouth for the signs & symptoms of cancer and to recognise these early. There will also be a chance to learn about how to reduce the risk of ever getting mouth cancer.

Consultant Oral Surgeon, Ms Stephanie Sammut of NHS Tayside, said: “This event is an excellent opportunity to learn how to self-examine and spot the signs of mouth cancer. Early detection is key and can lead to a higher chance of survival - the earlier mouth cancer is detected the quicker it can be treated.

“Although most mouth conditions are not cancerous, if you spot anything unusual such as a lump or ulcer which lasts longer than two weeks, you should consult with a dentist or doctor.

The charity will be working in collaboration with Staff and Students from Dundee Dental School. Each of the three days, the team will be available to talk to the public about Mouth Cancer and give professional advice on how to check their mouth for cancer. The Steeple Centre will also host an information hub that will provide help on stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake; both of which are risk factors for developing mouth cancer.

On the evening of Thursday 26th November the charity will be holding a free training event for local health care professionals that will include live talks from a surgeon specialising in oral cancer, dentists and mouth cancer patients.

Visit the team in Overgate on Thursday 26th – Saturday 28th to find out more information!
