Overgate will celebrate VisitScotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology with a special one-day event this Saturday 18th November.

The public are being invited to rediscover the city’s unique Jute, Jam and Journalism heritage between 11am and 4pm with a range of activities in the centre relating to the legendary three Js.

Local weaver Ashleigh Slater from Warpweftweave Studio will demonstrate live jute weaving as he creates a unique and distinctive Overgate and Jute, Jam & Journalism tartan design.

An art exhibition from local artist Nicola Wiltshire, previously displayed in the Verdant Works museum - also known as Scotland's Jute Museum - will explore in bold colour the people, processes, architecture and innovation of the jute industry.

Alison Carrie is a local author whose book If These Wa's Cuid Talk is inspired by the stories of Dundee’s textile industry and its workers. Alison will be setting up a stall to sell small gift items made from jute as part of fundraising efforts to help with the publishing of her book.

Local charity Help for Kids will also be the beneficiary of proceeds made from the sale of local fruit jam from Mackays.

Speaking ahead of the event, Malcolm Angus, Centre Manager of Overgate said: “We are pleased to be presenting Jute, Jam & Journalism in the centre this Saturday as part of VisitScotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. Dundee has an intriguing history and an impressive cultural heritage, and we hope people will join us to rediscover the three Js and also enjoy viewing the work of the local creative talents helping to keep the city’s cultural legacy alive.”
