100 photographs which capture the ‘real picture’ of autism in Scotland will go on display at Dundee’s Overgate Shopping Centre to mark this year’s Autism Awareness month.

The Autism in Focus exhibition, being run by the charity Scottish Autism, features a diverse range of pictures, all captured by people in Scotland who live with the condition or by members of their family. Each photograph is accompanied by a personal story which aims to create further awareness and understanding of what life can be like on the autism spectrum.

The free exhibition will be displayed throughout the Overgate Shopping Centre and open to the public from 30 March, running until the end of April.

Scottish Autism, a charity which seeks to help those diagnosed with the condition to lead full and enriched lives, is staging the Autism in Focus exhibition in Dundee as well as in Edinburgh to mark April’s designation as Autism Awareness Month in the UK. The 100 images represent the fact that an estimated 1 in 100 people live with autism.

Charlene Tait, Director of Autism Practice and Research at Scottish Autism said: “At the beginning of this year we asked people in the autism community what they wished others knew about being autistic. We received photographs and accompanying stories from 100 individuals and families who wanted to show the ‘real picture’ of autism. It is a powerful collection which evokes a range of emotions, some are funny and uplifting and others more poignant, depicting the challenges and adversity people face.

“The Autism in Focus exhibition aims to build further awareness about the condition amongst the general public and create greater understanding and acceptance of autistic people.”

“Overgate is delighted to be hosting the Autism in Focus exhibition, a fantastic initiative highlighting the condition through a series of compelling photographs and stories. The exhibition is free and available to view within the centre through April. By providing this space, Overgate hopes to help the charity’s efforts in creating further awareness for Autism Awareness Month.”
