A day in the life of…Overgate’s Guest Services Manager!

To celebrate Retail Matters Week 2017 (9-13th October) we will be introducing you to a day in the life of Overgate’s Management Team. Keep an eye out on our blog this week and join us in celebrating people in retail places!

  1. Who are you and what’s your role?

My name is Craig and I am the Guest Services Manager at Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee. I look after security, housekeeping, customer service and the service deck, totalling just over 43 staff members so as you can imagine, it’s not an easy job!

  1. How long have you worked at Overgate?

I have worked in the Overgate Management team for 1 year, before this I worked as a Regional Scheduling Manager for OCS.

  1. A typical day in the life of Overgate’s Centre Manager consists of:

A typical day for me would involve a lot of admin and HR responsibilities, wages, uniform etc. I spend a lot of my time trying to find ways to improve the teams at Overgate with training initiatives, team building exercises and getting involved in lots of charity work. I have to juggle a lot of budgets in my role making sure the services we provide to Overate are within the means of the budget and delivered on time. I have a responsibility to the team to make sure all site procedures, risk assessments and COSHH assessments are current and in date. I am ultimately responsible for their health and safety, welfare and duties whilst working at Overgate.

I am very passionate about the team at Overgate. I believe we have a great bunch of individuals here. All are very friendly, approachable and always work to the best of their abilities making my job that little bit easier.

  1. The thing I like best about my job is:

I absolutely love having such a large diverse team of people to look after. Every day there is something different to deal with whether good or bad and it certainly keeps me on my toes. There is an amazing bunch of managers up on Level 5 at Overgate and I have found the support I have received from them in my first year has been unprecedented. I couldn’t be where I am now without their support and faith in my abilities.

  1. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a policeman when I grew up and I fulfilled my dream when I became an RAF Policeman in 1998.  I spent 12 years in the military and came out in 2009.

  1. If you could trade lives with one person for an entire day, who would it be and why?

I would trade places with a movie star like Tom Cruise. I would love to be in front of a camera doing stunts and reading lines in a movie role. I know it would be hard work but at the same time a lot of fun.

  1. If you had a super power, what would it be and why?

I have this conversation quite regular with my children believe it or not and my answer is always the same.  I would have superhuman strength so that I could go around the world helping others 😊
