A day in the life of…Overgate’s Administrator!

To celebrate Retail Matters Week 2017 (9-13th October) we will be introducing you to a day in the life of Overgate’s Management Team. Keep an eye out on our blog this week and join us in celebrating people in retail places!


  1. Who are you and what’s your role?

My name is Karen and I am the Administrator at Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee, it is a very diverse job, but it is always interesting!

  1. How long have you worked at Overgate?

I have worked in the Overgate Management team for 8 years, before this I worked in Next within the centre, so I have been in the building for some time now.

  1. A typical day in the life of Overgate’s Administrator consists of:

A typical day would start with the weekly team briefing, checking the mall traders are in place and conforming to Overgate standards. After this I could be dealing with the invoices processing them on to the various systems we use. I can spend a significant amount of time on the phone dealing with utilities companies and our main maintenance and soft services contractors ensuring that the billing is correct and up to date.

During lunch I will catch up with the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce events section as I feel attending these events raises Overgate`s profile within the City Centre.

I could then check out retailer promotions and answer any queries from the Overgate website. I will raise any required Purchase Orders for any works that have been commissioned or orders made and I will chase the AP department to ensure Overgate is on top of paying the bills. I will update the mall music we play, reconcile the Gift Card accounts and assist Overgate`s charity Help for Kids with event planning.

  1. The thing I like best about my job is:

I like having the opportunity to be involved with so many different parts of the shopping centre business. I really like enjoy and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with our charity and on community initiatives.

I am involved with the Operations and Technical Services Managers which gives me a real overview of the whole business. Through the years I have become the go to person for the retailers, staff and managers if help is required from a project and I am always willing to help and try a new challenge.

  1. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be an air hostess, I love to travel and have been lucky enough to see a lot more of the word recently.

  1. If you could trade lives with one person for an entire day, who would it be and why?

I would love to be Anna McNuff who said “Just start; that’s the best way to get going on an adventure.” Anna urges people to leave their fears at home and get outside. In 2013, she cycled seven months and 11,000 miles on a pink bike taking in every state in the US. Last year she ran 1,911 miles along New Zealand’s Te Araroa trail. She once walked out of her back gate with a backpack, and an open European itinerary to be decided by votes from her followers on social media. She is also on a mission to get children outdoors and exploring. Through her endurance challenges, she’s raised awareness, as well as more than £20,000 for the charities Right to Play and The Outward Bound Trust. I think a day in her life would be amazing.

  1. If you had a super power, what would it be and why?

I would love to fly – just think of how many more places I could visit!!
